Department of Zoology: Educational Visit to National Museum 26th February 2019
Department of Zoology organized an Educational Visit to National Museum, Delhi on 26th February 2019 for the students of B.Sc. Life Science II year SEC group accompanied by faculty member as a part of coursework entitled SEC Sericulture.
The trip mainly encompassed a tour through museum with Special focus on exhibition on Baluchars: The Woven Narrative Silks of Bengal. Baluchar textiles of Bengal have been known for its 300 year old historic weaving tradition based on unique pictorial representation. The exhibition showcased rare collections from National Museum, Crafts Museum as well as textiles from prominent collectors. The interactive exhibition was aided by an audio-visual display, demonstrations on the looms of weavers. The exhibition enabled understanding of silk textile its context, its designs, motifs; comparison to relevant art forms as well as materials and techniques used in weaving silk based on contemporary artistic tradition. Overall the visit enhanced our holistic understanding of silk as a textile tradition and was highly informative.
